The department offers two Standard Grade courses and Three Higher Grade courses. At S1 and S2 the department helps to deliver the school's Information and Technology course. The 'Young Enterprise' course gives 6th year students an opportunity to set up and run their own business for a year and this course is run by the department.

Standard Grade Courses

Business Management

This course aims to develop an awareness of business and to develop skills and knowledge in students. The course also provides opportunities for the student to acquire skills and confidence in the use and handling of information technology in a business context. Areas of study will include Marketing, Human Resources, Finance, IT and Decision-Making.

This course is a 2 year course and uses both continuous assessment and formal examination. Further detailed information can be obtained from the Principal Teacher.

Administration

This course is concerned with the development of skills and knowledge in the area of administration in a business context. Confidence in the handling of information technology is a major aim of this course. The student is given opportunities to acquire skills in the presentation of a wide range of business related documentation. The course uses business software to solve administrative problems. Areas covered will include Word-processing, Databases, Spreadsheets and Desktop Publishing.

This course is a 2 year course and uses both continuous assessment and formal examination.. Further detailed information can be obtained from the Principal Teacher.


Higher Grade Courses

Business Management

For a student to follow this course it is not necessary for them to have taken the subject at Standard Grade.

To take the course at Higher level a student would normally be expected to have a grade 1 or 2 in Business Management and to be attempting Higher grade English in S5. A credit pass at Standard Grade English is acceptable in place of a credit pass in Standard Grade Business Management.


The course at Higher level is divided into 2 units of work

1 Business enterprise
2 Business Decision Areas.

There is no investigation to be carried out as part of this course.

The covers marketing, finance, Human Resource Management and the role of Technology in problem solving and decision making.

Assessment is both continuous and external.


Administration

For a student to follow this course it is not necessary for them to have taken the subject at Standard Grade.

To take the course at Higher level a student would normally be expected to have a grade 1 or 2 in Administration and to be attempting Higher grade English in S5. A credit pass at Standard Grade English is acceptable in place of a credit pass in Standard Grade Administration.

The course at Higher level is divided into 2 units of work

1 Administration Services
2 Information Technology

There is no investigation to be carried out as part of this course.


The course introduces the student to skills of decision making and problem solving as administrators supporting management and the organisation's activities.

Assessment is both continuous and external.


Accounting and Finance

For a student to follow this course it is not necessary for them to have taken the subject at Standard Grade. It is preferable if students opting for this course have a credit pass in Mathematics and are attempting English at Higher Grade in S5.

The course at higher level is divided into three units of work

1 Financial Accounting
2 Management Accounting
3 The Use of Accounting Information

This course encourages students to think in a logical manner and to develop their problem solving and decision-making skills.

Assessment is both continuous and external.
